This week has been all about fractions, we have looked at the vocabulary connected to fractions and explored the meaning of the words associated with this area of mathematics. In addition the children have representing fractions using resources and symbols.

Along with the maths the children have completed their setting descriptions for their narratives working on expanded noun phrases, sentence openers and adjectives. There were some very well thought out descriptions which used all five of the senses to describe the setting. Well done Ash.

In art the children have been working on developing their brush strokes techniques, having a go at using different brush sizes to develop their fine painting skills. These will now be put to the test when they come to paint their Russian Doll models once they are completed.

Home work this week is the usual daily reading, a spelling activity and statistics on the mathletics site.

Have a lovely weekend,

See you next week,

Rachael Worsley.

Welcome back to the start of the spring term!

I cannot believe how quickly the first term went and now we are starting not only a new term but a new decade as well!

I hope you all had a great Christmas Holiday and are now ready and raring to start the term.

As always, we are planning plenty of learning opportunities packed full of exciting things for us to get fully involved with.

The Spring term whole school topic is Asia and in year 4/5 we will be studying Russia.

This learning has already got off to a flying start with the children receiving a package from Russia with many things in for us to explore and investigate.

If you have any artefacts, books etc you would like to share with the children then please drop them into any of the Year 4/5 classes and I am sure we will make good use of them.

The homework this week is to complete 20 minutes of reading every day and record this in the home school diary.

Have a lovely weekend, see you next week

This week has been all about rehearsals and I am pleased to say we are now almost polished and ready to share with you.  We hope you will be able to join us for our Ks 2 Christmas Carol Service on Monday in the church at 2:00pm.

Along with rehearsals the children have been completing their narratives about Kid Normal, finishing of their division work in maths with some problem solving activities and building their terrariums in DT; these will be ready to send home at the end of term.

Home work this week is to continue to rehearse the songs ready for the performance on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend,

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 8th November 2019

I would like to start this weeks blog by saying thank you to the children who were excellently behaved during our maths open morning.

They worked well on their maths activities and there was a real buzz in the class room as the children shared their learning with each other and the visitors.

As well as our open morning the children have also taken part in a cultural day learning about the Hindu religion and comparing this to other religions. They really enjoyed the work shop we took part in especially the dressing up activity!

Next Friday we will be supporting 'Children in Need day', wearing something spotty and taking part in a whole school activity work out session.

Home work this week is a reading comprehension and times table activity,

if you have any problmes please pop in to see me.

Have a super weekend,

Rachael Worsley.

In literacy we will continue with our current book study, 'Kid Normal', looking at biographies and story endings.

In maths we are at present working on addition and subtraction before we move on to division and multiplication.

Home work this week is mathletics activities and a purple mash reading activity. If you have any problems with logging on please pop into see me.

Have a super weekend see you next week.

Friday 18th October 2019

Well half term is here and it certainly has been a very busy one.

So far in our topic we have looked at the history of Chulmleigh focusing on how it has changed, researching old buildings and maps.

In art we have studied the local artist Jo Pryor and created some faces in a contemporary style.

In science we have looked at animals and plants, exploring and comparing different life cycles.

For our maths learning we have covered, place value, roman numerals, addition and subtraction and in literacy we have been studying the narrative, 'kid Normal'.

Our PSHE focus has been new beginnings, class charters and feelings.

................................................

So as you can see we have been very busy and we still have such a lot to cover next term.

The homework set over the half term is the two competitions and details about these have been sent home with the children, in addition to this if the children could keep up with their daily reading that would be fab.

Enjoy Half term, hopefully there will be some sun to enjoy.

Rachael Worsley

Friday 11th October 2019

Almost at half term and I have no idea where the time has gone!

We had a super local walk around Chulmleigh this week as part of our history learning. The children were all very engaged in the information they were learning about and gathered plenty of evidence for their information pages about their local village. A huge thank you from the year 4 /5 team to Gill Stevens for supporting us with this and being a very informative tour guide.

Maths this week has seen the children looking at addition and the strategies they can apply to support them with their adding skills.

In literacy we continue with our current text, the children have written their letters and are now in the process of editing them to improve and up-level their work.

Home work this week is a review of a book they have read or are currently reading and writing a poem for the poetry competition; along with the usual daily reading.

The children have emptied their pebble pot and uncovered the treasure buried, which was, 'to bring a teddy to school for the day', (chosen by them) so on that note they have been told they can bring a sensible sized teddy to school on Monday.

The pebble pot has been filled back up again with new treasure buried at the bottom, hopefully it will not take too long to empty and we can have another treat before the end of the Autumn Term.

Enjoy the extra long weekend see you Monday,

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 4th October 2019

Yet another week has flown by and the children have as always been super busy.

This week we have covered Roman Numerals, looking at where we see them, how they are used, what the different letters represent and problem solving with them. We even had a code to crack as part of our Kid Normal capability training lesson! which was great fun.

In literacy the children have been drafting letters to the Head Teacher Mr Souperman from the text we are studying convincing him to allow Murph the main character to stay in school.

Next week we are off around the village on a local historical tour. Gill Stevens has kindly offered to share her expertise with the children so hopefully we will have some sunshine for our budding historians.

Home work this week is a Roman Numeral Challenge and vocabulary builder,

if these have not made it home I have spares in class for the children to collect.

Have a lovely Weekend

Rachael Worsley

Friday 27th September 2019

In literacy this week we have been working on our current text 'Kid Normal', looking at different sentence types and finding these within the text.  The children have then applied these to their own extended writing activity, ensuring they used questions, statements, exclamations and commands.

In maths we have completed out work on rounding applying our learning to problem solving using the RUCSAC strategy to support the problem solving skills.

In science we looked at the different life cycles of the three types of  mammals, (Placentals: Monotremes: Marsupials) and the advantages and disadvantages each group has.

Homework this week has been times tables and a character profile of themselves.

have a lovely weekend,

see you next week,

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 20th September 2019

Well as always we have had another busy week of learning in Ash Class.

The children have been working hard in maths rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 using place value and number lines to support their understanding of this.

In literacy we have looked at apostrophes, adjectives and alternative synonyms. The children have created their own villains for their stories and used thesaurus to find alternative synonyms for their fantastic adjectives.

In science we have looked at pollination and taken cuttings from plants to see if we can grow clones from them, we will keep you updated with the progress.

In topic work we have been looking at Chulmleigh researching its history using maps to locate old buildings and comparing how the village has changed over the years. Home work this week is a reading comprehension and mathletics activities, if you have any problems with the home work please pop into class and I will help to sort these out.

Enjoy the sunshine,

see you next week

In maths we are working on place value, ordering numbers and exploring different ways of representing numbers using concrete and abstract forms.

In science we looked at parts of plants and what these specific parts do.

Our topic has focused on 'Marvellous Me', in art we have research the local Artist Jo Pryor collecting facts about who she is and what style she likes to paint in.

Home work this week is topic related, the children are to create their topic front cover page, decide where they would like to get to when we do our daily physical activity along with daily 20 minutes reading, which is to be recorded in home school diaries.homework set 11.09.19.docx PDA homework set 11.9.19.docx

Friday 21st June 2019

Firstly a big well done to all members of Dart class who entered the talent show, there were so many acts to choose from the school council had a very tricky job but the final few that made it through to represent our class did us proud.

This week we have been working on our revision of symmetry and shape. We have looked at horizontal, vertical and perpendicular lines as well as revising those all important 2D and 3D shapes properties and names. The children have also been very busy looking for symmetrical shapes and recognising shapes in different orientations.

In literacy we have been working our with through our story, 'Romans on the Rampage', looking in detail at the story, pulling apart the introduction, build up, problem, resolution and ending, although the children have not yet read the ending as they are going to invent their own.

The children have started to map the story and plan their own version, which we will write up next week.

In topic we have been looking at where the Romans came from and which countries they invaded, along with researching mosaics and roman numerals.

Home work this week is to create the 8th wonder of the world and as this was given out a day late the children have an extension allowing them to hand it in on Tuesday rather than Monday.

Enjoy the weekend,

 See you Monday,

Rachael Worsley

Friday 07th June 2019

Well I can not believe I am saying welcome back to the final term of this year! where has it gone?

The children have come back ready and raring to go which is great to see.

We launched into our second mini topic of the summer term, ' Life on Earth as a Roman' with a whole morning of historical research on Monday.

The children enjoyed using a wide range of resources and working in teams to gather facts about a certain period from British History, which they then had to share with the other teams teaching them what they had learnt.

Check out our time line hanging from the classroom ceiling!

In addition to our research we have started a new genre in literacy, ' Narratives', looking at the book 'Romans on the Rampage', by Jeremy Strong. The children are working their way through a range of grammar and writing techniques in order that they have the tools to write their own Roman Narrative.

In maths we have completed our learning on money and are now reviewing our learning of angles and turns.

T

he home work this week is linked to the new topic Romans and is a comprehensions task with a tines table activity for the year 4's.

Have a lovely weekend,

see you on Monday.

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 24th May 2019

Well there went another very fun filled half term!

We seem to have packed in so much this term with the residential, rehearsals for the dance festival next term and visits from the Life Guards, the children certainly deserve a well earned rest and  it is on that note that there is no official homework set for half term, however, we would encourage daily reading and rehearsal of those all important times tables.

Next term we continue our 'Life on Earth' topic looking at 'The Romans' and their lives so if you have any books, resources etc that you would like to share then please pop them into class.

Thank you all for your continued support,

have a lovely half term,

hopefully the sun will shine!

Rachael Worsley

Friday 17th May 2019

Well it has to be said the children had a fantastic time on the residential last week and it was a pleasure to take them away. It was great to see them all trying new challenges, growing in confidence and working together on team building activities. The year 3 / 4 team were really impressed with their behaviour, which was outstanding, it was well worth the sleepless night! To see what we were up to check out the face book page for some great photos.

This week we have been writing about the trip in our literacy lessons thinking about past tense, the 5w's and fronted adverbials. In maths we have completed our statistics and moved on now to capacity. Hence the home work this week being a combination of statistics revision and capacity introduction which is on the mathletics site, any problems logging in please let me know. In addition to the mathletics is the usual reading which needs to be recorded in diaries and sent into class.

With the warm weather we have recently been enjoying it would be helpful to have the children bring a sun hat and water bottle to school, there is access to the water fountain but having a water bottle does mean they can be drinking water in class throughout the day.

Many Thanks,

Have a lovely weekend,

Rachael Worsley

Friday 3rd May 2019

This week we have started working on our newspaper reports looking at the features of this type of text and why they are important. The children have been working on their 5ws and using this to report on the mysterious box that appeared at the college last week. We will continue with this  style of report writing over the next couple of weeks.

In maths it has been all about statistics this week with the children looking at different types of graphs and charts, reading and interpreting these.

Next week we are on our residential and the children are already very excited about this, if you have any questions about the trip please pop into see a member of the year 3/4 team and we will be happy to help.

This week the home work was linked to our science sound, the children are to collect sounds they hear and record these on their sound sheet. On a further note there will be no home work next week as we are away on our residential.

Have a lovely weekend, enjoy the bank holiday see you Tuesday.

Rachael Worsley

Friday 26th April 2019

Welcome back every one. It was lovely to see all the children on Tuesday ready and raring to start the summer term. There were lots of exciting recollections told of adventures over the holidays and this is the reason I have asked them to write a recount for their home work . They can choose one particular activity or event they enjoyed or write about a selection, they can include a picture or photograph as well if they wish.

This term our topic is 'Life on Earth' with a science focus looking at sound. We started this topic off with an exciting discovery over in Hey Wood Hall, a mysterious box, the contents of which we have no idea about, apart from some clues that it could move, has light and makes sound!!

On that note our literacy this week has been sound poetry looking at Jessie Pope ' I like noise'. The children have explored onomatopoeia and how it is used in poetry and have written their own versions of Jessie's poem. These will be on display around the school if you would like to see them.

Attached is our summer newsletter, providing you with up and coming information, if you have any questions please pop into see me.summer newsletter.doc

Have a lovely weekend,

hopefully the sun will return at some point.

Friday 29th March 2019

As you may have guessed we are fully engrossed in our performance rehearsals now with singing and acting in full swing. All the children have been working really hard on their lines and we are impressed with how quickly it is all coming together. Many of the children have brought in their costumes, if you have not yet had the chance to do this could we please have them in by Monday at the latest for our dress rehearsal on Tuesday, thank you.

Tickets have been sent home with the children for each performance (2pm and again at 6pm on Thursday 4th April), if you do not need them if you could return them to school we can give these out on a first come first service basis.

On Friday 5th April (last day of term) we will be having a French Breakfast as a round off to this terms learning, a letter with all the details has been sent home today, if this shoud not make it home please pop into class and I will provide you with a spare one.

Many thanks

Rachael Worsley

Friday 22nd March 2019

Firstly I would like to say well done for all the fantastic posters and science competition home work that has been sent in over the last 2 weeks, the children have obviously worked really hard and should all be proud of what they have done.

This week we have continued with our fractions and decimals in maths looking at equivalent fractions, ordering and rounding decimals. Next week we will be going on to our time sequence of learning.

In literacy we have researched facts and data for our non-chronological reports and are now in the process of writing these up.

Next Monday and Tuesday is parents evening so if you have not yet made an appointment and would like to see me then please pop into class or drop me an email and add your name to the appointment list.

There is formal homework this week, I would just like the children to read daily for 20 minutes, continue to learn their lines and song lyrics and in addition they can work on times table rock stars 3,6,8 times tables which are the focus of next week.

Many Thanks

Rachael Worsley

Wednesday 13th March 2019

This week the home work will be reflective of our production, as all the children need to be rehearsing their lines and having a go at the songs lyrics. I have added these to the class page for your reference.

Song lyrics only.docx

Along with this there is the science competition to be getting on with, details of which will be given out in assembly on Friday 15th March 2019.

Many Thanks Rachael.

Friday 8th March 2019.

Firstly may I say a huge well done to all Dart Class for such a fantastic effort on Monday when we had the Literacy Open Morning, they were exemplary with their learning and demonstrated to the parents visiting our class how we learn all aspects of our liteacry curriculum. Well Done All.

We have had a busy week this week with the Open Morning, a surprise visit from Pudsey Bear, World Book Day and our Movie Night I should think all will need a good rest over the weekend!

This weeks Home Work is based on Science week, which is taking place all next week, the children are to design a poster about a journey, they have all been given information about how to achieve this and can collect resources from school if they need them.

We have a few milk bottle tops in ready for the Easter Egg Hunt at the end of term, if you have any spare tops at home that you could donate could you please pop them in to class that would be much appreciated, thank you.

A costume list for our production has gone out this week, could outfits  be brought in, in a bag with a name on many thanks, any problems please pop in to see one of the 3/ 4 team and we will help.

Have a lovley weekend see you on Monday,

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 1st March 2019

Well the first week back seems to have flown by so quick and I feel this will be the theme of the term! We have taken auditions for our Production Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies and now have a fantastic cast, all the children have been given their parts with costume lists being finalised and sent home within the next few days, if you have any problems with your costumes please pop in and see one of the year 3 / 4 team and we will help.

In literacy the children have once again been all fired up about the plight of the rain forest as we received another letter from the Rain Forest Alliance team thanking us for our research so far and asking for our help to persuade developers not to build a 6 lane motorway through the rainforest! response letters to the request for help are in the process of being written and will be on display should you want to read them. They are very persuasive. :-)

Home work this week is a mathletics activity based on the learning we are currently doing on fractions, in addition to this the children can choose a story of their choice from purple mash, read through the chapters and then complete a book review, this is to encourage all children to complete daily reading as this is so important for their learning.

Please remember next week is World Book Day when the children can dress as a book character and bring in their favourite book to share and on Friday we have our movie night.

Take care, have a lovely weekend,

Rachael Worsley

Friday 15th February 2019.

Wow half term is here already and it seems to have flown by so quick. We had an excellent cake sale on Thursday the children really enjoyed making and then selling their produce, a huge thank you to all who supported them with this.

We have had a busy half term learning about the rainforest and the dangers it faces, the children have become really engaged with this topic and lots of them have started their own independent research projects looking at different ways to save the animals and trees from devastation. We will continue with this topic next term and build on what we have already learnt.

As it is half term there will be no homework set apart from your usual reading to keep going with and your timetables to have a go at.  In addition to this after half term for music we will be making musical instruments so with this in mind could you please collect any useful objects: ie bottle tops, cardboard tubes, elastic bands, plastic bottles etc. and bring these into school for the first week back.

Have a lovely break see you next half term.

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 8th February 2019.

Hope you all enjoyed the snow last week, well done for completing the snow day tasks and activities.

This week in maths we have been working on our measuring skills, paying particular focus to measuring perimeters. The children have explored different shapes and found ways to calculate the perimeter by way of counting all sides and finding alternatives to counting all using muitlpilcation facts. They have also worked out how to calculate the perimeter when measurements are missing or the shape is a compound shape.

In Literacy we have completed our narrative sequence on the Vanishing Rainforest with the children writing their own ending to the story, thank fully many chose to continue the theme of our research and have the Yanobi Tribes people rescue the rainforest and work alongside the Nabe to create tourists huts for visitors to learn about the rainforest and its creatures.

In science we have looked at teeth and decay and planned our own investigation to see which drinks have the most impact on our teeth.

For homework this week I want you to imagine you are an explorer in the rainforest. You need to write a short diary based on the events that had taken place whilst you were busy exploring and discovering the new species you found for last weeks home work. In addition please complete the times table rock star sheet and your daily reading. home work Set 06.02.19.docx

Have a lovely weekend, see you Monday.

Rachael Worsley.

Thursday 31 January 2019.

Hello as many of you have found traveling to school difficult due to the icy conditions I have uploaded your home work for this week, please choose from Green, Amber or Red, this is a topic based homework.

In addition to this could you please complete the final session of our book talk which is to write your own ending to the Vanishing Rainforest story we have been reading and learning from in class. Think about the characters you have met and the problems they faced. How will your story end, will the rainforest be saved or completely devastated or will the Nabe, the farmers and the Yano tribe find a solution that works for them all.

If you manage to complete these tasks you can log into Times Table Rockstars and have a go at your 6 x tables which we are working on at present or try some activities on mathletics.

Have fun and stay warm.

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 25th January2019.

For science Dart class this week have been learning all about their teeth and the functions of each type. We looked at our teeth in mirrors and counted up how many we had, we compared our teeth to that of other animals looking at herbivores, carnivores and omnivores observing similarities and differences.

In maths we have completed our unit of learning about shape with the children finishing this by way of an investigation using 2d shapes. Next week we will move onto measuring length.

Our literacy continues to be linked to our topic 'Planet Heroes', we have looked at the text 'The Vanishing Rainforest' and thought about why the tribes that live in the rainforests are under threat and how this might impact on their feelings.

Home work this week is a reading comprehension along with some mathletics activities, if you have mislaid your home work then please come and let me know and I will get you another copy. Home work needs to be in every Monday with home work club on a Tuesday for those who do not get the chance to complete it at home. Diaries must be handed in each day with daily reading recorded.

Have a great weekend, see you Monday.

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 18th January 2019.

Well we have had a busy week this week looking at poetry and exploring creative language, the children have all written their own rhyming poetry using their senses, taking inspiration from rainforest images and music.

In maths we have been working on shape looking at the difference between 2d and 3d shapes, exploring angles, finding acute, obtuse and right angles as well as lines of symmetry.

For our topic work we have located the rainforest on the world map and looked at why the location has an impact on the climate. In science we have unpicked the digestive system and looked at the functions of the various organs involved, we even conducted our very own digestion experiment!

Home work this week is to complete the tasks set on Purple Mash. The children each have four tasks to do. They should have their log in  information stuck into thier home diaries and we have had a practice at how to log in and follow tasks set. The children do not have to print anything off as we will be able to see the tasks from our accounts. If you have any problems getting on a computer at home, please do let me know as soon as possible.

Enjoy your weekend ,

Rachael Worsley

Friday 11th January 2019.

Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to the start of the spring term. Our new whole school topic this term is 'Planet Heroes'. Year 3 and 4 are focusing their efforts on the rain forests and to launch our way into this we spent Wednesday creating a Rain Forest Book Corner. The Children thoroughly enjoyed researching facts for this, looking at the plants, animals and insects that live in the rain forest and making these. If you have the time you must pop into class and take a look, they are very proud of their achievements.  We will now spend the rest of the term learning about the rain forests and thinking about how we can help to save them from devastation.

Home work this week reflects our topic with the children being asked to design their topic book front cover, this can be as colourful as they want it to be and based on any aspect of the rain forest they would like.

If you have any books or artefacts that would support the topic please feel free to drop these into class and we will share them with the children.

Many thanks,

Have a lovely weekend see you Monday,

Rachael Worsley.

A huge well done to all the children this week for their outstanding performance on Monday in the Ks2 Christmas concert, I was really proud of them all, thank you Dart Class you were great.  The final week of this term is upon us with plenty of fun to be had. On Wednesday we will be having our Christmas make and bake day, if you have any spare glass jars with lids could we please have these in ready for our snow globe making on Wednesday, thank you.

This week is the final week for homework which is a word search and maths activity along with the usual reading, there will be no homework set over Christmas, I just want them to enjoy the festivities and be fresh and ready for the Spring Term.

Have Lovely Weekend

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 07th December 2018.

The children have really got into the swing of Christmas this week with final preparations for the Ks2 Christmas concert being put into place, the light up the life service and the Christmas Fayre. Thank you to all those who donated glass jars for our candle decorations which were on sale at the fayre along with our marshmallow snowmen. The children enjoyed making these however the temptation to eat the marshamallows was a challenge thankfully

 we succeeded, just!

Friday 23rd November 2018,

Thank you to all those who attended parents evening this week, it was lovely to meet and touch base with you and let you know how well the children have settled into Dart Class, if you have not had the chance to pop in I am around after school most evenings so please feel free to contact me.

Maths this week has been all about multiplication, we have looked at factors of numbers, products and multiplying by 2, using this to help us multiply by 4 and 8.

In literacy we focused on Road Safety Week, we looked at different texts and how the message of staying fit, healthy and safe is advertised to the reader. The children then wrote about the benefits of cycling and how to keep safe.

In science we have been investigating changing states from solid to liquids and finding out which chocolate metled the quickest, white, milk or dark, from their investigations the children are now in the know so be warned if they come home rading the cupboards to make chocolate cripsie cakes in a hurry as they know which choloate to use!

Home work this week follows the road safety theme as the children are to make a road safety poster, this is in addition to the times tables and reading.

many thanks Rachael Worsley.

Friday 16th November 2018.

Well what a fantastic array of yellow we had as we joined the rest of the school to create a giant Pudsey face on the playground. Hopefully it will feature on the BBC Pudsey Event on Friday.

In maths this week we have looked at factors, looking at what these are how we generate them as arrays, number sentences and rainbows. We looked at which numbers have more, odd or even and why some numbers only have one pair.

In literacy we have been writing our own Viking Explorer Diaries. We looked at the features of a diary, language within them and the layout as well as time connectives and past tenses. In addition to the diary writing we have been working on 'Anti Bullying week activities', thinking about the bully, the victim and scenarios that could occur. We have represented this work in the form of art.

Home work this week is a bullying actvity sheet and times table rock stars, if you have any problems please pop in to class to see me.

Thank you to those who have booked slots for parents evening I have a few spaces on Tuesday if you have not yet booked an appointment the sign up sheet is on the door.

Reports will be sent home today, just in case they are hidden in their bags.

Thank you to those who have returned their deposit monies for the Year 3 & 4 residential trip to Great Potheridge House in May 2019.  For those who have not yet returned their deposit and slip, please could we remind you that we need these in by Wednesday 21st November so we can work out numbers.

Have a lovely weekend

Rachael Worsley.

Friday 9th November 2018.

I must start with a thank you to the children this week, they were exceptional in the maths morning, working their way through the different maths activities and sharing their learning with the parents who popped in. In maths this week we have been focusing on inverse operations, looking at what this means and how we can use this to check a calculation.

In literacy we have been working on diary extracts looking at the style and features of a diary, language choices and past tense vocabulary. We will use this learning to support our diary writing when we write 'a  day in the life of a Viking'.

Our science learning has moved on to states of matter, so far we have looked at the difference between liquids and solids and how we can tell them apart, and we have started to investigate gases comparing the particle make up of each of these states..

Homework this week is a reading comprehension and mathletcics activity. If anyone has any issues please pop in to calls and I will try to help. Our residential letter was set out yesterday. I have attached this just in case it has not made it home. We will organise an information session after school to allow for any questions to be answered- (date of information session to follow once confirmed with Miss Bagshaw and Miss Le Gross).Potheridge Letter 1.docx

Have a lovely weekend Rachael Worsley.

Friday 19th October 2018.

Well half term is here and it certainly has been a very busy one. So far in our topic we have looked at the lives of Vikings, exploring their way of living, researching, designing and building Viking long houses we have looked at the Bayeux Tapestry and started to sew our own embroidery Viking shields, along with covering electricity in science, place value addition and subtraction in maths, studying the narrative, 'There's a Viking in my bed! Dance and movement skills, started to play the Ukulele, worked on feelings and new beginnings in PSHE and covered a range of spelling strategies and guided reading.

As you can see we have been very busy and we still have such a lot to cover next term when we will continue to work on our current topic Invaders and Settlers. There is no formal homework set over the half term, if the children could just keep up with their daily reading that would be fab.

Enjoy Half term, hopefully there will be some sun to enjoy.

Rachael Worsley

Friday 5th October 2018.

          Well September certainly flew by!

This week the children have been working on revising their place value using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. In addition to this we have looked at Roman Numerals thinking about where we find them, what they tell us and how the Romans number system is different to ours.

For our Literacy we have continued to work with our current text, focusing on verbs and adverbs, co-ordinating conjunctions and paragraphing. The children have worked on these skills and then applied them to a longer piece of writing where they were to describe the present the Viking had got for the Ellis family.

In topic we have been looking at Viking long houses researching what was in them and how they would have been laid out. The children have then drawn a floor plan of a Viking house and are now in the process of building a model settlement, this will be on display in the classroom once it is finished.

Home work this week consists of a compression, some Roman numeral mathsroman numeralmosaic homework due 8.10.18.pdf and the usual daily reading. All the children have now been given their mathletics cards which are stuck into their diaries this will now allow us to begin to set this style of home work once the classes have been set up by the IT team.

Have a lovely weekened, see you next for a shorter four day week.

Friday 28th September 2018.

This week in maths we have been working on rounding numbers, we looked at place value again to recap on digits and their place in the number system before looking at the rules for rounding. We drew number lines to support our understanding of where numbers are placed and then went on to rounding to 10, 100 and 1000.

In literacy we have continued to work on our text, 'There's a Viking in my bed'. The children have worked on verbs and adverbs this week as well as speech and are now planning and writing the middle of the story thinking about where they would take the Viking Sigurd for the day. We had some interesting places to go from Disney Land, Plymouth Aquarium to Exeter Chiefs. I am sure the Viking will have a great time where ever he is taken!

In topic we have been working on our Bayeux Tapestry looking at shields and desiging our own pattern ready to pin to fabric and then start sewing. In addition to this we have talked about inspirational people, the qualities they have and why they inspire us.

Once again thank you for your continued support with the homework, this weeks home work is a maths activity, spellings activity and the usuall 20 minutes daily reading. Matheltics cards and Times Table Rockstar cards will be coming home next week with activities being set at some point.Red 4 digits.pdf Yellow 3 digits.pdf Green 2 digits.pdf vocabulary building sheet different set 26.9.18.docx

Have a lovely weekend, hope the sun shines.

Friday 21st September 2018.

This week the children have been learning about character descriptions in Literacy, looking in detail at the character Mrs Tibblethwait and thinking about exciting ways to describe her appearance and personality using similes and metaphors. In maths we have focused on number sequences, adding and subtracting multiples of ten, along with looking at and finding common multiples of numbers.

For our topic work we have explored the lives of a Viking family looking at the different jobs they had to do around the farm and home and comparing this to our lives today.

Science has seen us explore electricity a little further thinking about its importance, what it is used for and why it is dangerous, the children have designed safety posters highlighting the potential risks from misusing electrical items.

Thank you for all the support with the homework last week the topic front covers look great and are now in the topic books. We will compile a list of places we would like to get to when running our daily miles as we have some fantastic close and far away sites the children would like to visit. Home work this week is a maths activity and spelling activity along with the usual daily reading which should be recorded in diaries and handed in each day for review.Colour-by-Multiplication-to-12x12-Activity-.pdf vocabulary building sheet said set 19.9.18.docx

Have a lovely weekend, see you Monday

Friday 14th September 2018.

Well what an excellent first full week with the children. We were introduced to our topic with a visit from some Vikings who took us to the field and asked us to create settlements using resources they gave us. Once our settlements were complete with shelters and firewood we found we were being invaded and we could do nothing to protect what we had built, this was very annoying!

In addition to this learning the children have also looked at the events surrounding the Battle of Hastings, started to create their own version of the Bayeux Tapestry and explored electricity and its uses.

Our maths learning has focused on place value, ordering numbers up to four digits. For Literacy we have started looking at the text 'There's a Viking in my bed' and immersed ourselves in the language that describes Vikings and their actions.

Home work has been given out and is accessible on this page.PDA homework set 12.9.18.docx I have also added minutes from meet the teacher if you were unable to make it. Meet the teacher notes.docx Autumn one Dart timetable.docx

29/06/28

Well we have been blessed with the sunshine, how lucky, and with that in mind could all children please bring in a drinks bottle as the classroom gets particularly warm in the afternoon and I am allowing them to have a drink on their table to minimise disruption in learning to the water fountain.

The maths this week has been about capacity with the children exploring measuring liquids the sunny weather has helped with this keeping the water to the outdoor area.

In literacy we have read some ore of our new book Cosmic and worked on descriptive writing techniques. For topic our science experiment is going well, some of the food we are trying to grow has started to sprout new shoots others have not been as successful. Next week we will look at ways of taking this investigation further.

The dance festival is fast approaching so could all costumes be in by Wednesday of next week, please see the attached letter for further details.

Have a lovely weekend see you next week.

22/06/2018

Dart Class have been very busy this week with final preparations for the dance festival underway; a costume letter has been sent home with details about this if you have any problems please pop into class or send a message in the home school diary. A copy of the letter has been attached to the class page.

Maths this week has been linked to the topic with the children gathering data and representing this in tally charts, frequency tables, graphs and pie charts.

For literacy we have started a new sequence and are looking at the text 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Tthe children are finding this a very amusing story. So far we have looked in detail at the main character and the activities he gets up to.

Our science learning this week has seen us plan an experiment in response to a letter from Tim Peak thanking us for the results of our astro nappy investigation and asking for our help with growing vegetable  in space where there is no soil. As this investigation is on going the results have not yet been collected but we will be sure to respond to Tim Peak with a letter detailing our findings.

Have a lovely sunny weekend, see you next week.

17/05/2018

This week in maths we have been learning all about position and direction. This has involved reading and plotting co-ordinates in all four quadrants. Next week will be building on this as we translate shapes into different co-ordinates.

Our literacy learning has seen us complete our 'piano sequence' with the children writing a personal recollection in the style of an autobiography as the pianist.

For topic this week we have looked at the sun and how this is used to tell the time. The children have also drawn an alien and are now in the process of making these using modelling materials. The finished aliens will be used to support our creative writing as we take them out  into forest school to have them land on Earth!

Next week we will be having a DT day on Friday the last day of this half term, the children will be designing and building space buggies, if you have any junk modelling materials these would be much appreciated.

Home work this week is a reading comprehension along with the usual times tables, reading and spellings.

A quick reminder, as the weather is now warming up it is a good idea for the children to have a water bottle in school then they can rehydrate throughout the school day and sun hats are advisable for playtime.

Have a lovely weekend,

Rachael Worsley

04/05/2018

This week with the mathematical learning we have launched into area and perimeter, we have looked at what these terms mean and how they differ. We have looked at ways to work out the perimeter and started exploring ways to calculate the area of compound shapes. this sequence of learning will continue next week.

In literacy we have continued to work on 'The Piano', looking at the thoughts of the pianist and how these may differ to what he is actually saying. In addition to this we have looked the mood and how this changed throughout the movie.  Next week we will being to create our own voice overs for screen shots in the movie and use these to add to our own versions of the movie.

Topic learning has been all about the planets, looking in detail at what they are made of, where in the solar system they are positioned and how this has an impact on their rotation and revolutions.

Homework this week is mathletics and the usual reading, times tables and spellings.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend, hopefully the sun will shine.

Many Thanks Rachael Worsley.

27/04/18

This week we have continued to work on our literacy sequence exploring emotions of the film and how these might changes for different aspects of the movie. In maths we have been recapping on our multiplication looking at prime numbers, factors of numbers and square numbers working through how to find these and using them in our problem solving.

Topic lessons have focused on the planets and how they differ, as well as space time travel and significant events from the past, which the children have documented on time lines.

Home work this week is a reading comprehension about the moon, along with the usual spelling, times-tables and reading expectations.

PE is on a Wednesday and this is dance; they will need leggings or jogging bottoms for this, Thursday is outdoors and they will need their trainers and usual PE kits for this.

Have a great weekend, see you Monday,

Many thanks Rachael Worsley.

19/04/18

Where did the first week go!

The children have been very busy this week starting their new topic 'Space'. They have created a space reading corner and investigated asteroids in science. For the maths learning this week we have been finishing our learning of time, looking at problem sovling, reading time tables and converting time from 12 hour to 24 hour clock. The literacy sequence this term is 'Film Narratives',we are studying the short Film The Piano by Aidan Gibbons. The children have been really captivated by this film which has no speaking but instead uses music to evoke emotions in the audience.

The home work this week is topic based with the children being asked to design their topic front cover and come up with questions they would like to find the answers to throughout the topic.

If you have any resources or books that will help bring the topic to life then pleases feel free to send them into school and we will use them to inspire the children and their learning.

Have a great weekend,

see you Monday Rachael Worsley.

02.04/18

Wow, that was a fun filled spring term, which saw the children visit Eden Project for their residential to round of their topic learning, 'Rainforests'. Take part in science week investigating ways to clean water; well done Emily for winning the competition for Dart Class. Make Easter hats, well done Sam for winning this for Dart Class and finally produce their performance, 'Pirates of The Curry Bean'. The children worked exceptionally hard on this and I am very proud of their achievements.

There is no set homework for the Easter Break apart from some daily reading to ensure they stay on track with this; the children deserve a well earned rest so they are ready for the summer term, which, will be as busy as the last I am sure!

Enjoy the Easter Holidays, thank you for all your support this term.

Rachael Worsley

23/03/18

Well another extremely busy week has just flown by and we are heading towards the final!

The children are working really hard trying to fit in their learning around rehearsing for the play and I really appreciate their efforts with everything. We made a start on our science this week with each group deciding on an investigation they would like to do, we will continue with this learning next week.

The homework this week is related to the science and a sheet with information was sent home on Tuesday of this week, this homework needs to in by Monday 26th March. I have uploaded the homework should anyone have misplaced it.

Reports have been given put today so the children will all have one on them when they leave school. I have some slots available for parents evening on Monday and Tuesday of next week if you want to discuss anything in the report, please pop into class and add your name to the list.

Have  lovely weekend, see you Monday Rachael Worsley

18/03/18

Well firstly a huge thank you to all the children for an enjoyable Eden Trip, you were all stars and a pleasure to take away on residential. Given that we have another snow day tomorrow I have uploaded some homework on 'time' as this is our next sequence of learning in maths, you have spellings to complete from last week, ready for test on Tuesday, the usual reading and times tables to be getting on with.

In addition to this if you could draw a picture of your favourite part of the Eden trip and write a paragraph about it we will then add this to your recount writing that you will be doing this week in literacy.

Enjoy the snow,

Rachael Worsley.

11/03/18: I have added the song lyrics so the children can begin to rehearse these for the play.

Many thanks Rachael Worsley

08/03/18.

Hello all, with the snow days last week we have been catching up with our literacy focused 'Book Week' activities. The children are in the process of writing their own versions of Matilda, these will be up on display once completed.

Homework:

As we are fast approaching our play the next two weeks homework tasks are to learn your lines in the play, if you do not have a speaking part you need to be learning the words to the songs.

Times tables

Please remember to continue with your times tables practice recording what you have done in your diaries

Reading

Children should be reading for 20 minutes every day - either independently, with an older/younger sibling or to an adult. Please could you record and sign this in the home school diary for me to check.

I have added the kit list for the trip which takes place next week, if you need any more information please pop into see me.

Book week was going really well with the children enjoying the text 'Matilda', they have produced some great imaginative writing.

Given the weather conditions and the fact that school has been closed we will continue with this learning next week. With this in mind I have uploaded some 'book week' related activities for the children to complete in order that we can continue with our learning next week.  These include some maths challenges which they should pick a selection to do, crosswords  and word searches. On Wednesday we started to research facts about Roald Dahl if the children could continue with this and complete the fact file this would be great  ( there are 3 to choose from so just pick one)

In addition to this I have also set some work on mathletics to be completed by Tuesday and there is the usual reading and timestables activities to be getting on with. I have also added the spelling mats to this page so that the children can pick 8 words they have not yet covered this term and have a go at these spellings using a choice of spelling activities (rainbow words, dotty words, busy bee etc) to rehearse them. These will the be tested next week during 'partner spelling test time' on Tuesday.

Enjoy the snow, have fun and take care if you are out and about.

09/02/18

Well I can only say what a busy half term this has been! The children have really embraced their new topic 'Rainforests' and we have achieved a great deal of learning already. The children have gained  an awareness of the importance of the rainforests and how we should be looking after them, identified where they are in the world and why they are found in these particular locations and compared their lives to that of the tribes living out in the rainforests. This topic will continue after half term where we will deepen their learning though our trip to the Eden Project.

Home work over the half term is a mini project- to create a Rainforest model or Yano-meeting area. the children could illustrate these and the different layers using the interior of a shoebox or cereal box. being as creative as they like, they could include real plants and soil, moss, lego, plasticine and even wool! They might want to add labels to show the key features they have included. Should they have any problems with resourcing this project please just ask and I will endeavour to help.

In addition to the mini project they should continue with times tables practice recording what they have done in your diaries alongside daily reading and their spellings.

Have a lovely half term,

kind Regards Rachael Worsley

02/02/18

This week we have been busy preparing the final touches to our smoothie day, the children tasted their smoothies, evaluated them and decided on their two favourite smoothie flavours. On Friday they created posters and labels to advertise their stall before selling them to an eager crowd. We raised a good amount towards our trip and all the children had fun making their smoothies for sale.

In Literacy we brought our persuasive writing to an end with the final piece of writing being a letter to the Rainforest Alliance explaining what they have learnt and how they intend to support the rainforest cause, hopefully the children will receive some correspondence back from these so I will keep you posted.

Home work this week is to create a poster about a newly discovered species of plant or animal in the rainforest, a long with their usual reading, spellings and timetables which should be recorded in their home-school diary.

Have a lovely weekend see you Monday for the final week before half term.

25/01/18

Another busy week where the children have been working hard on their rainforest reports and these are now at the stage of being written up ready for presentation. Maths this week has focused on shape looking at reflection and symmetry. Next week we will moving onto fractions.

In topic work we have been designing smoothies, the children have collected their research designed labels and will be taste testing their ideas next week in readiness for a smoothie sale.

Homework this week is a reading comprehension along with the usual reading, spellings and times tables and on that note I am pleased to tell you that we now have 'Times Tables Rockstars' to help us with our times tables. The children will each have their own logins and can go on at home as much as they like. Colleagues at school have used it previously and it really did make a big difference with the children’s times tables. Each week, we will be able to see who is the ‘Rock Hero’ and who is making the most progress. The more the children go on, the more points they will get so the funkier they will be able to make their avatars. I will sometimes set this as a homework where the children will need to spend a set amount of time on this program. I have attached a letter with al the information you may need to access 'Times Table Rockstars' however if  you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to come and speak to me.

Have a lovely weekend, see you Monday.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year to you all!

Welcome back to a new and exciting term! As usual, I’m sure you will agree, how quickly the Christmas holidays went! However, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and you are now ready for a new year and an exciting term! Last term was packed full of exciting things for us to get fully involved with and I can ensure you, this term will be just the same.

This term we are delving deep into the rainforest to deepen our understanding of them as well as their importance in the world we live in. We will be looking at maps of where rainforests occur, looking at the different layers of the canopies as well as researching what we might find in its depths.

Here are some useful and fun websites:

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we have now finished our current topic Ancient Egypt we would love for you to come along and share our learning with us on Friday 8th December in our Egyptian museum. This will be taking place in the hall from 9:30 – 10:30am. This will give the children a chance to share their learning with you and for you to see what we have been getting up to.

The last week before Christmas

In the last week, just before we break up we were hoping to let our creativity flow!

On the Wednesday afternoon we are hoping to get really Christmassy and make some wonderful Christmas cards and do some festive baking. If you are available to come along and offer a spare pair of hands, they would be very much welcomed.

In this week, we are also hoping to create some snow globes. To make these, each child will need an empty jam jar, so if you have any spares, please do send your child in with one for us to use.

On the Thursday we will be exploring a range of board games, so if you would like to bring in a board game (clearly labelled) for us to have a go at, that would be great! In the morning of this day we were also hoping to host a French breakfast. Any donations of grapes, juice, pastries would be very much welcomed.

I hope this gives you enough information but if you do have any questions, please do not hesitate to come in and ask.

Kindest regards.

Rachael Worsley.

23.11.17

We are now becoming increasingly busy with rehearsals for up and coming Christmas events and the children are working really hard.

In maths this week we have been working on our multiplication with the children completing daily times table challenges to increase their skills in this area. In addition we have been working on grid methods of multiplication and using this to support our problem solving.

In literacy we have started our new sequence ‘recounts’. The children have this week been looking at the features of a recount, collecting information about Howard Carter and comparing first person to third person.

Thank you to all those who attended parents evening, it was lovely to meet you all and discuss how the children are getting on, if you did not manage to make an appointment and you would like to see me feel free to contact me to arrange a time that is convenient.

A polite reminder that children need full PE kits in school for Wednesday and Thursday, (leggings or jogging bottoms as the weather is getting colder now and for dance it is helpful as they are on the hall floor).

Home work: Is the usual reading and spellings, along with some mathletics activities that have been set linked to our learning about multiplication and division.

Have a lovely weekend.

09.11.17

Yet another busy week for Dart Class. This week we have been working on our number factors, looking at multiples, common multiples and prime numbers. We have explored number patterns and applied our skills to problem solving.

In literacy we continue our sequence of learning, 'poetic style'. This week we have focused on similes and metaphors, learning about the differences between these, finding examples in a passage of writing and having a go at writing our own. We will continue with this sequence of learning over the course of next week with a view to writing our own descriptive bonfire poetry.

Home work: As we have been learning about Egyptian Houses the homework over the next 2 weeks is to create an Egyptian house. The children could draw a floor plan of an ancient Egyptian house to include the different rooms - bedroom, kitchen, living room and cellar. Mark on where windows, doors and any ramps or stairs would be.

They could construct a rich ancient Egyptian villa, using card, recycled boxes, art straws, modelling dough or any other art/craft materials.

Have a lovely weekend.

Another week has flown by! This week we have focused alot on adding larger numbers using column addition and becoming confident at our explaining of how we do this. We have also looked at finding missing numbers and solving problems. In Literacy, we have been planning our final piece of writing linked to our class book Journey to Jo'Burg. The children started writing their stories today and they are looking amazing; I can't wait to read them when they are all completed! We have also done some great writing in our topic lessons this week linked to our learning about the day in the life of an Ancient Egyptian farmer.

The children's homework this week includes their reading, spellings and some addition tasks set on Mathletics. If you have any trouble accessing these, please come and see me.

Have a lovely  weekend and see you on Monday morning ready for another busy week!
